How To Check If You Have 32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu

 

  1. Via Unity

  2. Via Terminal

 

Via Unity:

The easiest way to determine if you are running a 32 bit or a 64 bit version of Ubuntu is to launch Details from the Unity app launcher.

  • Click Unity Logo
  • Type ‘details’ into search bar

  • Click Details
  • Note OS Type will indicate which version you are running either 32-bit or 64-bit

 

Via Terminal:

To determine if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu in terminal you can do the following:

  • Open Terminal (Hotkey: Ctrl + Alt + T)
  • Type ‘uname -a’ and hit Enter key

  • You will see output similar to this: Linux netdevtools-dev 4.4.0-59-generic #80-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 6 17:47:47 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  • Evaluate the highlighted portion before the ‘GNU/Linux’ text which will provide the following for the respective OS types:
    • 32-bit: i686 i686 i386
    • 64-bit: x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
